Drug and alcohol abuse

Drug and alcohol abuse is the overuse or abuse of drugs and alcohol that results in several medical problems and even causing death in extreme situations. Drug abuse includes the use and abuse of illegal drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy etc. and prescription drugs such as sleeping pills.

People abuse drugs and alcohol or both for many reasons that may vary from physical to psychological. Some may do so to feel better, to relieve stress or to cope with problems that they face in their life. Drug and alcohol dependence or addiction occurs when the individual develops a physical or emotional need for it. Casual abuse of drug and alcohol often escalates to habitual abuse leading to physical and psychological dependency.

Drug and alcohol abuse have several associated risks that include risk of personal safety, damaged health, legal consequences and behavior that may occur due to loss of control that harms not just the individual but also his/her family, friends and social group.

To recover from the damages caused by drug and alcohol abuse and to get out of addiction, the individual can choose from a variety of treatments available.  Treatments involve detox and rehab programs that can be chosen based on the gravity of the situation and the condition of the person who needs to undergo the treatment. For those who are at extreme stages and need intensive treatment, it is better to opt for a residential treatment or an inpatient treatment. If the person has recently taken up to drug and alcohol abuse then the individual may choose to recover from the comforts of his/her home through an outpatient rehab program.

It is important to choose a rehab center offering a program that focuses on treating the individual on a holistic basis. The person should be treated physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is important to strategically and smoothly transit the person to his/her former life by opting for the ideal treatment.

Drug and alcohol abuse can be treated and an individual suffering from this condition can return to a normal lifestyle if he/she gets the right kind of treatment from a reputable rehab center.
